Mukilteo Microclimate Observatory

Weather source accuracy, tidal rhythms, ferry transit, and the marine convergence zone
47.9063°N 122.2816°W · Paine Field / Possession Sound · Salish Sea watershed
Multiple weather sources report conditions for the same place. Over time, their accuracy diverges. The marine air funneling up Possession Sound, the Puget Sound Convergence Zone forming over Mukilteo, the rain shadow edge at the Cascade foothills — each microclimate feature tests the models differently. Measure. Compare. Score. Let the data decide which source knows this place best.

Weather Station Network

19 data sources across 3 tiers: 8 aviation METAR stations, 7 NWS/CWOP/NDBC stations, and 4 satellite/model sources. KPAE Paine Field is the primary ground truth — 2.5 mi from Mukilteo waterfront, 607 ft elevation on a bluff. Full station map and API details: Weather Data Source Map.

Aviation METAR/ASOS Stations

Automated Surface Observing System stations at airports. Temperature, wind, pressure, visibility, ceiling, present weather. Updated every minute (ASOS) with hourly METAR reports and special observations (SPECIs) when conditions change.

Weather Source Accuracy Scoring

Each source sampled during periodic sweeps. Accuracy scored against KPAE actuals over rolling 30-day windows. See scoring methodology for MAE, F1, and Brier score calculations.

SourceTemp MAEWind AccPrecip F1Notes
KPAEGround truth (reference)607 ft bluff — 2-3°C warmer than waterfront on calm nights
NWS Forecast0.23°C3/3 wind--Leading on temp accuracy — GFS/NAM blend captures local terrain
Open-Meteo0.41°C2/3 wind--ICON model good on trends, misses rapid marine layer shifts
KSEA0.68°C2/3 wind--25 mi offset — misses PSCZ events entirely, good for regional baseline
PurpleAir------Temp only — hyperlocal but uncalibrated, no wind/precip
Personal------Pending deployment — will be waterfront reference at sea level

Early scoring — 3 samples collected. NWS leading with lowest temperature error and perfect wind direction matches. See full station map for geographic context and API endpoints.

Scoring Methodology

Temperature MAE

Accuracy

Mean absolute error in °C between predicted and actual temperature. Lower is better. Scored over rolling 30-day window. Accounts for microclimate variation between airport and waterfront.

Wind Accuracy

Accuracy

Combined direction error (degrees) and speed ratio. Marine wind channeling up Possession Sound creates local patterns that regional models often miss.

Precipitation F1

Accuracy

F1 score for binary rain prediction (did it rain when they said it would?). Puget Sound Convergence Zone makes this the hardest metric — rain can fall on Mukilteo while Everett stays dry.

Fog Prediction

Accuracy

Dewpoint spread < 2.5°C predicts fog. Score: did fog actually form? Radiation fog on calm clear nights, advection fog off Possession Sound. Binary classification F1.

Confidence Calibration

Accuracy

Brier score — when they say 80% chance of rain, does it rain 80% of the time? Measures whether probability forecasts are well-calibrated, not just whether they're right.

Timing Accuracy

Accuracy

Hours off on front arrival. When the forecast says rain starts at 2 PM, does it? Convergence Zone events are notoriously hard to time — this metric reveals which models handle them.

Microclimate Features

Puget Sound Convergence Zone

Weather

When marine air splits around the Olympic Mountains, the two streams converge over north King County / south Snohomish County. This creates a narrow band of heavy precipitation that can dump rain on Mukilteo while Everett stays dry. The PSCZ is the primary source of forecast error for this location.

Possession Sound Marine Layer

Weather

Cool marine air funnels up Possession Sound from the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Creates morning fog, moderates temperatures, and channels wind differently than inland stations report. KPAE sits at the airport, 2 miles from the waterfront — the microclimate differs.

Cascade Rain Shadow Edge

Weather

Mukilteo sits at the western edge of the Cascade rain shadow transition. Annual precipitation drops sharply east of the Cascades. The foothills to the east receive more orographic lift precipitation than the waterfront. Elevation matters at every scale.

Tidal Influence on Air Temperature

Tide Weather

Large tidal exchanges in Possession Sound affect nearshore air temperature and humidity. Low tide exposes mudflats that warm differently than open water. The 12.4-hour tidal cycle overlays the 24-hour diurnal cycle, creating beat frequencies in temperature and fog formation.
