Paine Field (KPAE)

The Airport
Paine Field is Snohomish County's primary airport, located in unincorporated Everett, Washington, approximately 2.5 miles east of the Mukilteo waterfront. The airport sits at an elevation of 606 feet on the prairie above the Puget Sound bluffs — flat terrain that made it ideal first for military training and later for widebody jet production.

- Runway 16R/34L: 9,010 feet — the primary runway, capable of handling fully loaded widebody jets including the 747, 777, and 787 Dreamliner
- Established 1936 as a military airfield on county-owned land, originally a grass strip for Army Air Corps operations
- Named after Topliff Olin Paine — a World War I veteran and Everett civic leader who championed the county airport project
- Commercial service began 2019 when Alaska Airlines and United Airlines started scheduled flights from the new passenger terminal
- Passenger terminal: Modern, efficient, compact — designed to serve as a regional alternative that avoids Sea-Tac congestion for Snohomish County residents
The terminal handles a fraction of Sea-Tac's volume, which is exactly its appeal: shorter security lines, easier parking, and a 15-minute drive from Mukilteo instead of an hour to Sea-Tac in traffic.
Boeing Everett Factory

The Factory
The Boeing Everett Factory opened in 1968 to build the 747, the aircraft that democratized international air travel. Boeing chose this site because it needed flat land near Puget Sound for test flights, with enough room to build the largest enclosed structure ever attempted. The factory has expanded multiple times since, growing to cover 98.3 acres under a single roof.

- Visible from the highway: The factory is unmissable from SR 526 and I-5 — a building so large it generates its own internal weather patterns. It has direct taxiway access to Paine Field's runway

- Museum Historic Flight Foundation: Founded by John Sessions, this museum housed flyable WWII-era aircraft including a P-51 Mustang, Supermarine Spitfire, and de Havilland Mosquito. Closed at Paine Field in 2020, reopened at Felts Field in Spokane
- Museum Flying Heritage & Combat Armor Museum: Paul Allen's personal collection of rare WWII aircraft, vehicles, and armor. Featured flyable examples of a Fw 190, Me 262, and Japanese Zero. Closed in 2020 following Allen's death in 2018
- Active Museum of Flight Restoration Center: Still active at Paine Field — volunteers restore historic aircraft for the Museum of Flight's collection in Seattle
The loss of both aviation museums in 2020 was a significant blow to the Paine Field community. At their peak, the two collections together represented one of the finest assemblages of flyable WWII aircraft in the world.

Why KPAE Is Our Reference
Every airport of significant size operates an Automated Surface Observing System (ASOS) that reports weather conditions via METAR format every hour (and more frequently during significant changes). KPAE's ASOS is the closest professional weather station to Mukilteo — just 2.5 miles away — making it the natural ground truth anchor for the Mukilteo Microclimate Observatory.
- METAR Hourly automated reports: Temperature, dew point, wind speed/direction, visibility, cloud layers, barometric pressure, precipitation
- Distance to Mukilteo: 2.5 miles — close enough that KPAE observations are directly relevant to Mukilteo surface conditions
- KPAE vs KSEA: Sea-Tac International (KSEA) is 30 miles south and sits in a different microclimate. Sea-Tac is more exposed to southerly flow and less affected by the Puget Sound Convergence Zone. Forecasts keyed to KSEA routinely miss conditions at Mukilteo
- Convergence Zone position: KPAE sits near the northern boundary of the Puget Sound Convergence Zone — the narrow band where split Pacific airflow reconverges, creating localized precipitation. This makes KPAE observations particularly valuable for detecting convergence zone activation
The Dreamlifter
A modified 747 with a swing tail — one of the most unusual aircraft flying today.
Boeing 747-400 Large Cargo Freighter
The Dreamlifter is a heavily modified Boeing 747-400 designed for a single purpose: transporting 787 Dreamliner fuselage sections and components from global suppliers to the Everett assembly line. Four Dreamlifters exist in the fleet, and they are among the most distinctive aircraft in the sky.
- Dreamlifter Swing-tail design: The entire rear fuselage swings open on a hinge, allowing outsized cargo to be loaded directly into the cavernous hold
- Cargo volume: Three times the volume of a standard 747 freighter — 65,000 cubic feet of pressurized cargo space
- Global supply chain: Carries 787 fuselage sections from Italy (Leonardo, center fuselage), Japan (Mitsubishi/Kawasaki/Subaru, wings and forward fuselage), and South Carolina (Boeing Charleston, aft fuselage)
- Fleet size: Four aircraft, operated by Atlas Air under contract to Boeing
- Paine Field regular: Dreamlifters arrive at KPAE on an irregular schedule, delivering components for the 787 line. Each arrival draws aviation spotters to the overlooks around the airport
In 2013, a Dreamlifter accidentally landed at Colonel James Jabara Airport in Wichita, Kansas — a small general aviation field with a 6,101-foot runway instead of the intended McConnell Air Force Base. The aircraft was able to take off safely the next day, but the incident remains one of aviation's more memorable wrong-airport landings.

Mukilteo Blvd Overlook
Informal pull-off spots along the boulevard west of the airport. Good sightlines for approach and departure traffic on Runway 16R/34L. Bring a long lens — aircraft pass relatively close on final approach.
Kasch Park
Small neighborhood park near the approach path. Quiet spot for photography with less traffic than the main overlooks. Aircraft on approach pass overhead at relatively low altitude.
Best Times
Morning delivery flights offer the most widebody activity. Dreamlifter arrivals follow an irregular schedule — check Flightradar24 or FlightAware for real-time tracking. Test flights for the 777X program also depart from Paine Field.
