Thirty-seven research projects, one bioregion. From the Columbia Valley rainforest canopy to the backyard garden bed, from the mycorrhizal network beneath the soil to the structural engineering above it, from the smart thermostat on the wall to the ESP32 inside it, from the orca's biosonar to the fox's magnetic compass, from the cuticle scale to the roughness map, from the LED strip to the oscilloscope trace, from the guardian spirit to the scholarly source, from the server log to the trust-based firewall — each project maps a different layer of the same place. The salmon that feeds the forest, the elevation gradient that stratifies it, the birds that pollinate and disperse it, the mammals that shape its trophic structure, the physics that governs how they all sense their world, the crafts that render their textures in fabric and light, the traditions that teach how to listen, the gardener who tends a small piece of it, the builder who shelters within it, the maker who wires it all together, and the sysadmin who stewards the infrastructure that connects it, the air we breathe and the water we filter — all part of the same story.

Threads Across the Bioregion
Ten threads connect the sixteen PNW ecology projects. Each thread traces a single relationship system across the original research series, linking specific documents where that thread appears.
The Salmon Thread
Pacific salmon carry marine-derived nitrogen (N-15) from the ocean into riparian forests. Bears, eagles, and floods distribute carcass nutrients. Trees absorb them through mycorrhizal networks. The forest feeds the stream that feeds the salmon.
CAS Aquatic — salmonid profiles, nutrient cycle
ECO Marine Fauna — 39 species, orca-salmon
ECO Networks — salmon-nitrogen pathway
AVI Networks — eagles, herons at salmon runs
MAM Networks — bears, otters, salmon distribution
MAM Marine — orca-Chinook dependency
BPS Orca — biosonar tracking Chinook
BPS Salmon — magnetic map navigation
The Mycorrhizal Web
Underground fungal networks connect trees across entire forest stands. Mother trees provision seedlings through common mycorrhizal networks (CMN). Old-growth forests host the most complex networks. Even garden soil participates.
The Vertical Gradient
Every thousand feet of elevation rewrites the rules. Temperature, moisture, snow depth, growing season — all shift, and every shift opens a niche. The same gradient that stratifies the Cascades determines what grows in a garden.
Old-Growth Architecture
Ancient forests are not just old trees. They are multi-layered structures with nurse logs, snag habitat, canopy gaps, and fungal communities that take centuries to develop. Logging removes not just timber but irreplaceable biological architecture.
Climate Futures
The PNW is warming. Snowpack is declining. Fire seasons are lengthening. Heat domes are emerging. Each project documents what this means for its domain — from alpine species loss to garden adaptation strategies.
Native Plant Communities
From 800+ rainforest species to 36 garden natives, each project maps what grows here and why. Native plants are the infrastructure — the insectary borders, the erosion control, the pollinator support, the habitat backbone.
The Heritage Connection
Indigenous peoples have managed PNW ecosystems for millennia. First Foods doctrine, fire management, camas cultivation, treaty fishing rights — ecological knowledge encoded in cultural practice. The scholarly study of how this knowledge travels, transforms, and must be handled with care.

Bio-Physics Sensing
Every organism in the PNW reads the physical world through evolved sensors. Orcas echolocate Chinook in dark water. Salmon navigate open ocean by Earth's magnetic field. Foxes triangulate prey beneath snow. The physics is the same — the biological implementations are endlessly varied. The oscilloscope and the multimeter are how we stand at that boundary and ask: how fast? what color? when?
